    A note on applying the BCH method under linear equality and inequality constraints

    Researchers often wish to relate estimated scores on latent variables to exogenous covariates not previously used in analyses. The BCH method corrects for asymptotic bias in estimates due to these scores’ uncertainty and has been shown to be relatively robust. When applying the BCH approach however, two problems arise. First, negative cell proportions can be obtained. Second, the approach cannot deal with situations where marginals need to be fixed to specific values, such as edit restrictions. The BCH approach can handle these problems when placed in a framework of quadratic loss functions and linear equality and inequality constraints. This research note gives the explicit form for equality constraints and demonstrates how solutions for inequality constraints may be obtained using numerical methods

    Spatial contrast sensitivity in adolescents with autism spectrum disorders

    Adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and typically developing (TD) controls underwent a rigorous psychophysical assessment that measured contrast sensitivity to seven spatial frequencies (0.5-20 cycles/degree). A contrast sensitivity function (CSF) was then fitted for each participant, from which four measures were obtained: visual acuity, peak spatial frequency, peak contrast sensitivity, and contrast sensitivity at a low spatial frequency. There were no group differences on any of the four CSF measures, indicating no differential spatial frequency processing in ASD. Although it has been suggested that detail-oriented visual perception in individuals with ASD may be a result of differential sensitivities to low versus high spatial frequencies, the current study finds no evidence to support this hypothesis

    The effects of PTSD treatment during pregnancy: systematic review and case study

    Background: PTSD in pregnant women is associated with adverse outcomes for mothers and their children. It is unknown whether pregnant women with PTSD, or symptoms of PTSD, can receive targeted treatment that is safe and effective. Objective: The purpose of the present paper was to assess the effectiveness and safety of treatment for (symptoms of) PTSD in pregnant women. Method: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines in Pubmed, Embase, PsychINFO, and Cochrane. In addition, a case is presented of a pregnant woman with PTSD who received eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy aimed at processing the memories of a previous distressing childbirth. Results: In total, 13 studies were included, involving eight types of interventions (i.e. trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy, exposure therapy, EMDR therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, explorative therapy, self-hypnosis and relaxation, Survivor Moms Companion, and Seeking Safety Intervention). In three studies, the traumatic event pertained to a previous childbirth. Five studies reported obstetrical outcomes. After requesting additional information, authors of five studies indicated an absence of serious adverse events. PTSD symptoms improved in 10 studies. However, most studies carried a high risk of bias. In our case study, a pregnant woman with a PTSD diagnosis based on DSM-5 no longer fulfilled the criteria of PTSD after three sessions of EMDR therapy. She had an uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery. Conclusion: Despite the fact that case studies as the one presented here report no adverse events, and treatment is likely safe, due to the poor methodological quality of most studies it is impossible to allow inferences on the effects of any particular treatment of PTSD (symptoms) during pregnancy. Yet, given the elevated maternal stress and cortisol levels in pregnant women with PTSD, and the fact that so far no adverse effects on the unborn child have been reported associated with the application of trauma-focused therapy, treatment of PTSD during pregnancy is most likely safe

    Trauma-focused treatment outcome for complex PTSD patients: results of an intensive treatment programme

    Objective The objective of the current study is to determine whether individuals classified as having CPTSD can benefit from an intensive trauma-focused treatment, resulting in decreased PTSD and CPTSD symptoms, and loss of diagnoses. Method Patients diagnosed with PTSD (N = 308) took part in an intensive 8-day treatment programme combining prolonged exposure, EMDR therapy, psycho-education, and physical activity. The treatment was not phase-based in that it did not contain a stabilization phase or skill training prior to therapy. CPTSD diagnosis was assessed by means of the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) and PTSD diagnosis was assessed with both the ITQ and CAPS-5. Treatment response was measured with the CAPS-5, PCL-5, and ITQ. Results Symptoms of both PTSD and CPTSD significantly decreased from pre- to post-treatment resulting in a significant loss of CAPS-5 based PTSD (74.0%) and ITQ-based PTSD and CPTSD diagnoses (85.0% and 87.7%, respectively). No adverse events occurred in terms of suicides, suicide attempts, or hospital admissions. Conclusions The results are supportive of the notion that the majority of patients classified as having CPTSD strongly benefit from an intensive trauma-focused treatment for their PTSD

    Assumptions behind grammatical approaches to code-switching: when the blueprint is a red herring

    Many of the so-called ‘grammars’ of code-switching are based on various underlying assumptions, e.g. that informal speech can be adequately or appropriately described in terms of ‘‘grammar’’; that deep, rather than surface, structures are involved in code-switching; that one ‘language’ is the ‘base’ or ‘matrix’; and that constraints derived from existing data are universal and predictive. We question these assumptions on several grounds. First, ‘grammar’ is arguably distinct from the processes driving speech production. Second, the role of grammar is mediated by the variable, poly-idiolectal repertoires of bilingual speakers. Third, in many instances of CS the notion of a ‘base’ system is either irrelevant, or fails to explain the facts. Fourth, sociolinguistic factors frequently override ‘grammatical’ factors, as evidence from the same language pairs in different settings has shown. No principles proposed to date account for all the facts, and it seems unlikely that ‘grammar’, as conventionally conceived, can provide definitive answers. We conclude that rather than seeking universal, predictive grammatical rules, research on CS should focus on the variability of bilingual grammars

The signal is sensitive to the state-preparation Rabi frequency and external electric and magnetic fields applied in searches for a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM). In the obtained interference spectrum, the electric field and Rabi frequency become observable simultaneously with the EDM. This method reduces systematic biases and the number of auxiliary measurements for such precision measurements

    Quality of life and psychosocial outcomes in children with severe acute asthma and their parents

    Objectives: To prospectively evaluate quality of life (QoL) and psychosocial outcomes in children with severe acute asthma (SAA) after pediatric intensive care (PICU) admission compared to children with SAA who were admitted to a general ward (GW). In addition, we assessed posttraumatic stress (PTS) and asthma-related QoL in the parents. Methods: A preplanned follow-up of 3 to 9 months of our nationwide prospective multicenter study, in which children with SAA admitted to a Dutch PICU (n = 110) or GW (n = 111) were enrolled between 2016 and 2018. Asthma-related QoL, PTS symptoms, emotional and behavioral problems, and social impact in children and/or parents were assessed with validated web-based questionnaires. Results: We included 100 children after PICU and 103 after GW admission, with a response rate of 50% for the questionnaires. Median time to follow-up was 5 months (range: 1-12 months). Time to reach full schooldays after admission was significantly longer in the PICU group (mean of 10 vs 4 days, P =.001). Parents in the PICU group reported more PTS symptoms (intrusion P =.01, avoidance P =.01, arousal P =.02) compared to the GW group. Conclusion: No significant differences were found between PICU and GW children on self-reported outcome domains, except for the time to reach full schooldays. PICU parents reported PTS symptoms more often than the GW group. Therefore, monitoring asthma symptoms and psychosocial screening of children and parents after PICU admission should both be part of standard care after SAA. This should identify those who are at risk for developing PTSD, to timely provide appropriate interventions
